As of late, I tend to differentiate between "career" and "vocation." The structure of society compels careerism, jobism, the like, but a vocation--in my view--is what you are inwardly compulsed to do. A "good" structure of society (that is, a "human" one) would create the conditions that cause people to happen upon their vocation and do it. But the world as-is tends to fracture our sense of self. Not only that, careerism tends to despise people's inner-vocation, because that which is eminently human is usually not "productive," "efficient," or "profitable." I think we tend to take on that ire ourselves because we are hungry, want money, have to live, all that. I too, was randomly struck by the realization that I was a "Writer" regardless of professional status. In any case, a relatable piece.

Reminds me of Simone Stolzoff's "The Good Enough Job" and the sentiments/reflections I had while reading it.
